OLSH slips past Laurel girls
OLSH (55) Vs. Laurel (47)
Feb 02, 2012
Our Lady of Sacred Heart found its shooting touch early on in a nonsection clash at Laurel.
The Lady Chargers hit all six of their 3-pointers in the first half, led by Jacqueline Matthews, who sank four from long range in the first two quarters.
“They just shot the lights out in the first half,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “I can’t even say that we didn’t play good defense. They were contested shots, they were just stroking them.”
The Lady Spartans, down by as many as 18 at one point, pulled within three with 2 minutes left, but OLSH (12-4) made 9 of 14 free throws in the final frame to seal the victory. Laurel outscored the Lady Chargers, 15-8 in the third quarter to cut into a 32-19.
“We fought back, but OLSH is a good team,” Shevitz said. “They’re a playoff team every year. We want to play teams like that, teams that make us better, and this was a good team. We want the challenge — it’s the only way to get better.”
Marisa Wallas paced Laurel (7-13) with 11 points and five rebounds. Jessica Conrad contributed 10 points for the Lady Spartans, who committed a season-low six turnovers. Laurel, sixth in Section 2-AA, still has an outside shot of advancing to the playoffs, but the Lady Spartans must win out and get some help.
“This is the first time in as long as I can remember that there’s a glimmer of hope,” Shevitz said. “It’s nice to have something to play for in the final week.”
