'Canes stay unbeaten with rout
New Castle (79) Vs. West Allegheny (51)
Jan 26, 2012
An undefeated record isn’t changing the focus of the New Castle High boys basketball team.
The Red Hurricane kept its unblemished record intact last night with another dominant WPIAL Section 2-AAA victory, 79-51, over West Allegheny at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.
New Castle (7-0 section, 16-0 overall) was fundamentally sound in its win, forcing 26 turnovers compared to only five of its own. The ’Canes also grabbed 15 more offensive rebounds than the Indians.
“Those extra possessions were big,” New Castle coach Ralph Blundo said, “because we shot it pretty poorly tonight. But my guys did what they had to do.”
Shawn Anderson paced the ’Canes with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals. He scored 10 in the first half, when New Castle took a 36-20 lead. Malik Hooker provided 18 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Corey Eggleston added 11 points and eight assists.
Garrett Browning led the Indians (2-6, 6-8) with 16 points.
The ’Canes travel to Beaver on Friday for a showdown with the second-place Bobcats (6-2, 13-3).
“Our focus is already on Beaver,” Blundo said.
