New Castle (71) Vs. Seneca Valley (68)
Jan 24, 2012
Kaylynn Waters delivered in the clutch for New Castle in a nonsection road win over Seneca Valley.
Waters, a senior, buried a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left off a pass from Christina Talbert for the deciding margin. Waters finished with a team-high 31 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.
She scored the game’s last five points as well.
“Kaylynn had a tremendous game,” Lady ’Canes coach Jason Rankin said. “She wanted the ball at the end of the game; she’s a playmaker.
“To me, she’s the best player in the WPIAL. She didn’t hesitate when she knocked down that 3.”
New Castle is ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Post-Gazette and No. 4 in the state in Class AAA by the Patriot-News of Harrisburg.
Dana Perrotta backed up Waters’ performance with a career-best 15 markers. All five of her field goals were 3-pointers.
“Seneca Valley played some junk defenses and she was open,” Rankin said. “She missed a couple early but kept shooting.”
Talbert handed out a team-high eight assists for New Castle to go with her eight points. Kelsey Scott also netted eight points for the winners.
The Lady ’Canes (11-3) trailed 20-12 at the end of the first quarter and 31-16 midway through the second quarter before rallying.
“I’m disappointed with the effort to start the game,” Rankin said. “They were being tougher than we were.”
Alex Karika poured in a game-high 35 points for the Lady Raiders (8-6), who are coached by New Castle graduate Rob Lombardo. Karika registered 21 of her points in the first half.
