Lady ’Canes crush Ellwood
New Castle (80) Vs. Ellwood City (20)
Jan 20, 2012
The New Castle High girls basketball team made it look easy last night.

The Lady ’Canes built a 26-point first-quarter lead and rolled to an 80-20 WPIAL Section 2-AAA victory over Ellwood City Lincoln at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.

New Castle led 58-10 at the half and the entire second half was played under the mercy rule.

“I was pleased with how we shared the ball,” Lady ’Canes coach Jason Rankin said. “I thought we defended really well.

“I was happy with how we played in the first quarter. To race out to a 28-2 lead was real big. I thought we were sharp in all areas.”

New Castle (7-0 section, 10-3 overall) is ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and No. 4 in the state in Class AAA by the Patriot-News of Harrisburg. The Lady ’Canes have won six straight contests overall and lead the section by a game over Blackhawk (6-1, 13-1).

“We’re sitting on top (of the section),” Rankin said. “It’s a great feeling. We’re not resting on the fact we’re 7-0 (in section play) at this point.

“This is a very strong section. We can’t take anyone lightly. We have to do our job and keep getting better.”

New Castle senior Kaylynn Waters poured in a game-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, 14 of her points coming in the opening period. She added 10 assists as well.

“I thought Kaylynn got her shots,” Rankin said. “She’s getting sharper and that comes from playing.”

Christina Talbert followed Waters’ effort with 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Dana Perrotta added 11 points and Kelsey Scott contributed six boards to go with her seven markers.

Ki’Ria McPhatter posted eight points off the bench for New Castle, which was 30 of 52 from the field.

Bailey McKinney recorded five points for the Lady Wolverines (0-7, 4-10).

Last night’s game was the first of five in a seven-day stretch for the Lady ’Canes. New Castle squares off against Hampton, leaders of Section 1-AAA, at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

“They’re a good team; a WPIAL champion from a few years ago,” Rankin said of Hampton. “Going down there is always tough.

“To get better, you have to play good teams. We don’t hide from anybody.”
