Wilmington (52) Vs. Laurel (49)
Jan 16, 2012
The Wilmington High girls basketball team completed a busy week on a positive note on Saturday.
The Lady Greyhounds were 8 of 17 from the foul line in the fourth, preserving a 52-49 nonregion home win over Laurel.
It was the fourth game in a week for Wilmington (7-6), which went 2-2 during that stretch.
The Lady Spartans (6-7) finished a similar schedule, playing three games in a week. Laurel won one of those games.
“The girls were tired,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said. “There were a lot of fouls called and we never really got things going.
“It was a long week for us; we just ran out of steam.”
Alanna Elliott recorded a game-high 14 points for the Lady Greyhounds and Mackenzie Hiers was next with 10.
Wilmington was 20 of 38 from the foul line.
Ellen Shaffer paced Laurel with 13 points, while Jessica Conrad chipped in with 11. Aislinn Deinert pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds to go along with nine markers.
“Deinert is still playing great,” Shevitz said. “Her rebounding was spectacular; she’s looking really good.”
The Lady Spartans struggled at the line as well, going 13 of 22.
“The foul shots were big again,” Shevitz said. “We need to start making them.”
Five of Laurel’s seven losses have come by single digits. Shevitz said this week is crucial for her team. The Lady Spartans hit the road for a pair of games, against Neshannock tonight and Shenango on Thursday.
“Our focus is on these next two (WPIAL Section 2-AA) games,” Shevitz said. “That’s the big picture, section play and we need to be ready.”
Attempts to reach Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford for comments were unsuccessful.
