Jan 14, 2012
Union couldn’t sustain its momentum in the second half in a 52-46 Section 1-A road loss to Our Lady of Sacred Heart.
The Scotties (1-2, 6-6) led, 33-28, at the break. However, they were outscored 24-13 in the second half.
The Chargers (2-1, 11-1) are ranked No. 4 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Post-Gazette.
“We weren’t getting as many buckets in transition in the second half,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “We got out on the break a lot in the first half; we missed some easy ones that we could have put down in the second half.”
The Scotties trailed by just two points with 40 seconds to go, but couldn’t get any closer.
“We made a couple of critical errors and we had to foul a little bit at the end,” Smialowski said. “The kids played hard. It was a hard-fought game that we could have won.
“We had it in our grasp, but we just couldn’t grab it.”
Benjamin Young paced a balanced Union attack with 13 points and Tre Major was next with 12. Joe Salmen supplied 11 markers and Markel Peace contributed 10.
Andrew Orie and Matt Sangermano tossed in 19 points apiece for Our Lady of Sacred Heart.
