Joe Salmen nailed a game-tying shot with three seconds left in regulation, and the Scotties used the momentum to collect a Section 2-AA overtime victory at home.
Rochester hit a bucket to go up 49-47 with 15 seconds left. Union called a timeout and coach Dave Smialowski set up a play for Salmen.
“Joe made a nice move and made about a 15-footer to tie the game and put it in overtime,” Smialowski said. “The kids were pumped up and I think it carried into overtime. We took care of business.”
Three different players scored in overtime for Union (1-1, 6-5), which held Rochester (0-2, 0-11) to four points in the extra stanza. The Scotties’ Markel Peace led all scorers with 19 and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Benjamin Young added 13 points for Union, which held a four-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but made just 10 of 26 free throws in the game.
“It’s nice to get that first win in the section, but it’s not going to get any easier,” Smialowski said. “We got Sacred Heart and Lincoln Park coming up next.”
