Lucia Fee made sure she was in the right place at the right time.

Fee made a game-saving steal in the final five seconds of Mohawk’s 32-31 WPIAL Section 2-AA girls basketball road win over New Brighton last night.

New Brighton had the ball under its hoop with three seconds to play, and Fee stole the inbounds pass and got fouled to seal the Lady Warriors’ sixth straight win. Fee also was part of a smothering Mohawk defense, which allowed seven second-half points as the Lady Warriors (2-2 section, 8-3 overall) battled back from a 10-0 first-quarter deficit.

“They got out 10-0 on us, and down there, that’s the toughest place to play in the section,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “We never score well there. Defensively, we didn’t change too much. We just cleaned up defensively more around the rim. We were able to hold them to a lot of one-shot opportunities.”

Taylor Yarletts provided most of the offense, scoring 17 of Mohawk’s 32 points. Kaitlyn Hopkins netted 12 for the Lady Lions (2-3, 6-4). Fee tied Devon Giancola for a team high in rebounds with five. They added five points each for the Lady Warriors as well.

“As long as we play defense like we’ve been playing, we know that eventually we’ll get our offense going,” O’Lare said.
