Burkes, Haswell lead Lancers
Neshannock (65) Vs. St. Joseph (56)
Jan 09, 2012
Ernie Burkes and Ty Haswell delivered for the Neshannock High boys basketball team on Saturday.

The sophomore tandem netted 19 points apiece to pace the Lancers to a 65-56 nonsection road win over St. Joseph.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Neshannock (4-5), which trailed 25-12 late in the first quarter.

“It’s nice to get back in the win column,” Lancers coach John Corey said. “The goal of the two nonsection games (Friday and Saturday) was to use them as a springboard to get us back on track; we haven’t been playing very good basketball.

“I thought they responded very well. It would have been easy to fold it up and go home, down 25-12.”

Burkes recorded eight points in the first quarter and seven more in the final frame. He was 8 of 8 from the foul line, while handing out five assists. Haswell delivered 10 boards, posting 11 of his markers in the second half.

Neshannock was 21 of 55 from the field and 20 of 26 from the foul line.

Anthony Van Eman and Matt Seltzer contributed eight points each. Van Eman recorded eight rebounds and three assists.

“We shot the ball very well from the foul line; we’ve been struggling at the line,” Corey said. “I thought we did a good job of attacking the rim.

“We had a very productive night offensively.”

Mike Connelly recorded a game-high 20 points for the Spartans (5-4).

The Lancers were playing without John Sansone and Joe Iorio. Conglose rolled his ankle Friday in a loss to Beaver and Iorio has been out after sustaining a dislocated elbow in late December. Corey is hoping Sansone can return by as early as tomorrow’s game against WPIAL Section 2-AA rival Shenango.

“We’ve been playing without two starters and we’ve been battling a little bit of adversity, too,” Corey said. “I’m very proud of how the guys stepped up.

“I thought Connor Jones played a terrific game with the opportunity he was given. And John Conglose plays so hard. There were multiple plays against St. Joseph that he was diving on the floor. That’s what we need to turn this thing around.”
