Heaneys leads Lady Scots to title
Union (52) Vs. Laurel (49)
Dec 30, 2011
The Union High girls basketball team set a goal after a loss earlier this season.

Its objective wasn’t to make the championship game of the Union Booster Tournament. It was to win it.

The Lady Scots did just that last night with a highly competitive, 52-49, victory over visiting Laurel.

The game went back and forth throughout, with Union (5-4) taking a 29-21 halftime lead only to see it disappear as Laurel (4-3) went on an 18-7 run and led by three entering the fourth.

While Union twin sisters Marissa and Miranda Heaney were the catalysts for most of the night, Savannah Partridge finished off the Lady Scots’ final run, sinking two free throws with 13 seconds left to give them a three-point lead. Laurel’s Marisa Wallas nearly tied it with a last-second 3, but it rimmed out.

“It was definitely game of runs,” Union coach Brian Fadden said. “We were lucky to make the last run and take the lead. In my mind, we played two really good quarters. We played well in the second and fourth. We were a little nervous in the first because we haven’t played in a championship in God only knows how long, but we settled down in the second and started to play better.”

Marissa Heaney, the tournament’s MVP, led all scorers with 20 points, while Miranda added 15. Partridge provided 10 points and six rebounds. The Lady Scots went 18 of 22 from the free-throw line, while Laurel was 12 of 21.

“We lost tonight like we won last night,” said Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz, whose team beat Moniteau in the final minutes Wednesday. “The Heaneys were great tonight. They played phenomenal. Union really looked good. They played like a team. Hats off to them. They deserved it.”

Ellen Shaffer paced the Lady Spartans with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Aislinn Deinert scored 10.
