Dec 30, 2011
Devon Giancola sank a career-best five 3-pointers in Mohawk’s win at the Riverside Holiday Tournament.
Giancola was one of five players to hit a 3 for the Lady Warriors, who made nine total in the game. Giancola hit three of her five in the second quarter.
“She’s been making them since we started in the fall,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “She’s always been able to shoot, it just hasn’t been as consistent as it is now.”
While Giancola’s 17 points set a career high, Shelby Brown led all scorers with 21 points. She was 9 for 10 from the field (8 for 8 on two-point field goals) and 2 for 2 from the free-throw line. She scored eight in the first and 11 in the third.
The Lady Warriors jumped on Ellwood City Lincoln in the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Wolverines 18-2. They led, 29-16, at the half and stretched their lead to 17 by the end of the third quarter.
“We just didn’t come out ready to play,” Ellwood City coach Jolene Servick said. “Mohawk came out firing and we weren’t ready. I told them we can’t have these ups and downs. You have to play hard for four quarters.”
Asia Borders paced the Lady Wolverines (3-5) with 13 points. Kara Sainato added six points and six assists.
