Lady Lancers earn first win
Neshannock (55) Vs. Quaker Valley (46)
Dec 23, 2011
The young Lady Lancers notched their first win of the season as they held off the Lady Quakers on the road.

Neshannock (1-5) grabbed a 13-9 lead and went up, 28-15, at halftime. Quaker Valley (3-3) rallied for a 20-point third quarter to trim the Lady Lancers’ lead to 37-35. Neshannock hung on in the fourth to take the win.

“We came out in the first half and played very well, especially defensively,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “In the third, Quaker Valley spread it out and beat us on the dribble drive. We went from up being up 13 to up by just a basket.

“We had to get back on track on the defensive end. We played much better in the fourth quarter,” she continued. “You can see them growing a bit. The game got tight and we held our composure and did some good things. They have really been working hard on the defensive end. Our goal is to hold teams to 40 or under. We had the opportunity to do that if not for the third quarter.”

Neshannock’s Madison McHale led all scorers with 21 points and three assists. Tayler Grybowski registered 14 points, five rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Marissa DeMatteo added 12 points. Erin Warvell had six rebounds and two points, while Katie Burrelli chipped in six rebounds and two points as well. She was lauded for her defense.

“Katie played tremendous defense on Deann Ryan. She had been averaging near 20 points per game and she held her to eight,” Luann Grybowski said. “Katie played a great floor game. She stuck her nose in there on defense. She’s the smallest kid on the floor and she had six rebounds.”

The Lady Lancers held a 30-25 edge in rebounding and turned the ball over 15 times.

“Our guards took care of the ball much better,” Luann Grybowski said. “Having another game with 15 turnovers is great.”
