New Castle boys win title
New Castle (76) Vs. West Middlesex (61)
Dec 12, 2011
With all five starters back, the New Castle High boys basketball team knew it was set at the top of its rotation.
On Saturday, the Red Hurricane discovered it has some depth, too.
Facing foul trouble, New Castle went to its bench and was able to stave off West Middlesex, 76-61, in the championship of its own tournament.
The ’Canes (2-0) jumped to a 19-12 lead after the first quarter. They increased it to 34-24 at halftime. A 22-point third quarter boosted their lead to 56-38 heading into the fourth.
“That’s a good basketball team. They are going to be a load for teams to handle in that classification. They are big and physical,” New Castle coach Ralph Blundo said. “We were in foul trouble and that forced us to play differently. We couldn’t press a lot. It’s a good win; they beat a good Beaver Falls team Friday and they came in feeling good. We really had to go deep on our bench. Everyone gave solid minutes. Stew and Drew Allen and Jesse Salzano played solid minutes for us and helped us.
“It was a good game. The guys stepped up and played well,” he continued. “I am pleased. We took seven charges in the game, which I am proud of. We did a lot of things right.”
Tournament MVP Corey Eggleston led the ’Canes with 20 points and nine assists. Shawn Anderson had 18 points and eight rebounds, while Brandon Domenick had 17 points and seven assists. Anthony Richards chipped in with 11 points. All three made the all-tournament team. Stew Allen had six points and six rebounds off the bench.
Matt Dogan led West Middlesex (1-1) with 29 points. Jeremy Jansco had 12 points and Trey Staunch was next with 11.
Former New Castle standout David Young had his jersey retired before the game. Young was a 2004 Seattle SuperSonics second-round draft choice.
