Lady Lancers lose consolation
Pine-Richland (61) Vs. Neshannock (34)
Dec 12, 2011
Emily Johanson and Brittany Byerly combined for 46 points to lead the Lady Rams to the consolation win at the New Castle Tipoff Tournament.

Pine-Richland (1-1) led, 16-6, after the first and held a 31-18 halftime edge.

The young Lady Lancers (0-2) turned the ball over 40 times. Madison McHale, an all-tournament team selection, led Neshannock with 18 points. Tayler Grybowski had four points and six rebounds.

“We have a long way to go. People have asked me why I scheduled us in this tournament. The answer is simple — for the past three years, this group has really been on easy street,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “They’ve been comfortable and kind of complacent and weren’t really pushed. I wanted them to see exactly what it’s going to take. They found out two things: First, they need to be able to handle the ball, especially against the press. Second, if you don’t play defense, you won’t win; I don’t care how much you score.

“I have been trying to stress it. We have a lot of bad habits and were able to get away with that at a young age. It doesn’t matter how much I tell them that, they had to see it. My goal wasn’t to demoralize or embarrass them. My goal simply was to let them see that they have a lot of work to do. Hopefully, they see that. It’ll be a process. One bright spot is that, even though they were down, they never quit. They kept hustling and playing hard. They are trying to do the right thing, but they are a second or two late on their decisions.”
