The Wilmington High girls basketball team bolstered its playoff position last night.
The Lady Greyhounds took over sole possession of fourth place in District 10, Region 2-AA with a 45-39 victory on the road over Reynolds.
Wilmington (6-5 region, 12-9 overall) climbed within a game of third-place Greenville (7-4, 12-8). Wilmington plays at Greenville on Thursday.
“That’s a really huge game Thursday,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “(Last night’s) win really does give our girls confidence on the road.”
Wilmington erased an 11-5 deficit after the first quarter by outscoring the Lady Raiders (5-6, 10-10) 20-11 in the second quarter.
“It was a really slow start for us and I was very frustrated,” Sanford said. “I told the girls they need to get out there and play. Their defense was doing OK, but not great; they just needed to get out there and play Wilmington basketball.”
Trailing 37-35 after three periods, the Lady Greyhounds put the clamps down and outscored Reynolds, 10-2, over the final eight minutes.
“We just shut everything down in the fourth quarter,” Sanford said. “We were talking more and playing much better on both ends.”
Haley Marett notched a game-best 13 points for the Lady Greyhounds and Mackenzie Hiers was next with 12. Julie Burns pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with her six markers.
Jill Siege netted nine points for Reynolds.
