Spartans finish on high note
Laurel (57) Vs. Wilmington (52)
Feb 15, 2011
Laurel seniors Chad Long and Ryan Melichar helped the Spartans end their season by winning two of their last three games, including a nonsection victory over Wilmington.
Long scored a game-high 19 points and dished out six assists. Melichar scored eight points and sparked a key third-quarter run with four blocked shots. Laurel (5-16) went on a 21-8 run in that frame.
“Our two seniors played well and really made a big difference tonight,” Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said. “It was a game of runs. We started out hot early and then they made a run. The third quarter, we really played well defensively.”
Wilmington’s final run came in the fourth quarter, when the Greyhounds (8-12) moved within five points. Laurel shot only 5 of 13 from the free-throw line in the fourth, which aided Wilmington in its run. The Spartans made just enough down the stretch, though, to pull off the victory.
Darryl Pace scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Wilmington, while Anthony Derrick also notched 11 markers.
Todd Fennick chipped in 12 points and five assists for the Spartans.
