Aliquippa turns back Laurel
Laurel (62) Vs. Aliquippa (71)
Feb 05, 2011
Marisa Wallas’ career-high 28 markers weren’t enough for Laurel in a 71-62 nonsection loss at Aliquippa.
Wallas, a junior guard, netted 12 of her points in the fourth quarter. She was 13 of 18 from the foul line, which ties her with three other girls for the school mark for foul shots made in a game.
“Marisa played a great game,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said. “She just knows how to get to the foul line and make them when she gets there.”
The Lady Quips (18-2), who are ranked No. 4 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, led by just four points with two minutes left before pulling away.
Becca Kerr was next for Laurel (5-15) with 17 points.
The Lady Spartans were coming off a 40-33 loss on Thursday at Our Lady of Sacred Heart.
“I’m just happy with the whole team and how they played after a tough game Thursday,” Shevitz said. “This is a tough place to play.
“If you had told me we’d be within four points with two minutes left, I would have laughed. We’re still competing in the fourth quarter and we’ve improved so much”
Jaclyn Watkins tossed in 18 points to lead Aliquippa.
