Moon loss eliminates ’Canes
Feb 25, 2009
The news was not good for the New Castle High boys basketball team Tuesday night.

Hampton’s 61-39 win over Moon in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals ended the Red Hurricane’s season. New Castle needed the Tigers to reach the championship game to advance to the PIAA playoffs.

The ’Canes (18-6) were outscored 27-2 in the final 6:40 during a 65-49 loss to Moon 65-49 in the quarterfinals Friday.

“When you get down to the final four teams in the WPIAL, anything can happen,” ’Canes coach Mark Stanley said. “We had a bad stretch (against Moon) and it cost us.

“Looking back, it was a good year. If you’d said we’d get this far at the beginning of the year, I don’t think anyone would have believed you.”

Union’s season still has life. The Scotties (13-10) need Sewickley Academy to win the WPIAL Class A championship to qualify for the PIAA playoffs.

The Panthers knocked off Clairton, 55-47 last night, and will meet Serra Catholic on Friday in the title game.
