Lady 'Canes' Rodgers will wait for honor
Jan 27, 2009
New Castle High girls basketball standout Shelby Rodgers will have to wait to be honored.

Rodgers earned the ESPN 1250 Army Athlete of the Week award by virtue of online fan voting for her performance the week of Dec. 8 when she canned six 3-pointers in a 64-60 overtime win over North Catholic. She will be recognized at halftime of the boys basketball game against Youngstown Ursuline on Feb. 3. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Initially, Rodgers was going to be honored tonight at halftime of New Castle’s boys varsity game against Section 2-AAA-leading Blackhawk. However, ESPN can’t make the ceremony because of commitments in Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII.

In addition, New Castle will host a boys and girls basketball doubleheader Feb. 9. The Lady ’Canes’ JV squad will oppose Canon-McMillan at 5:15 p.m. and the varsity game will tip at 6:30 p.m., both in the main gym.

The boys JV game will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the auxiliary gym against Freeport, with the varsity game set for the main gym at 8 p.m. The contest against Freeport is a makeup of a game postponed Jan. 21.
