Shaler’s Howie Ruppert dies

Shaler coach Howie Ruppert died Thursday night of an apparent heart attack. The Shaler basketball coach had been battling leukemia since the summer of 2007. He was 65. Ruppert, also a social studies teacher in the district, was well-known in the New Castle area as his Titans staged some memorable section battles with New Castle and John Sarandrea. Ruppert became coach at Shaler after serving as a college assistant coach at both Duquesne and Seton Hall. Ruppert had coached Shaler’s first three games of these season and remained a teacher in the classroom.
