Lady ’Canes knock off Hopewell
New Castle (61) Vs. Hopewell (54)
The New Castle High girls basketball team took down one of its toughest section foes this season last night.
The Lady ’Canes knocked off Hopewell, 61-54, in a WPIAL Section 3-AAA game at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.
“It was a great win for us,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said.
Hopewell (2-2 section, 9-3 overall) was ranked third in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette with New Castle (3-1, 11-1) following at No. 4.
It was the Lady Vikings’ second straight section loss. Their 46-game section winning streak was snapped Thursday by Ambridge.
Hopewell has won the section crown four years in a row, including back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007.
The Lady ’Canes built a 22-14 lead in the first quarter, but Hopewell narrowed the deficit to a single point, 34-33, at the half.
“We had people in foul trouble early,” Grybowski said. “So we had got some quality minutes from bench players and they held us in there.”
New Castle converted 19 of 49 from the field and forced 20 turnovers.
Freshman Kaylynn Waters led the Lady ’Canes with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals. Shelby Rodgers followed with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
LaShauna Brothers chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while JaNia McPhatter had nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
