’Canes split pair at tournament
New Castle (79) Vs. Pine-Richland (68)
The New Castle High boys basketball defeated another familiar foe Sunday.

Tyrone Steals led a balanced attack with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals to pace the Red Hurricane to a 79-68 victory over Pine-Richland in the consolation game of the Dresch-McCluskey Tournament at Farrell High School.

New Castle (5-5) is 2-0 this season against former WPIAL Section 3-AAAA rivals. The ’Canes topped North Allegheny earlier in the month.

On Saturday, New Castle dropped a 78-64 decision to Erie Strong Vincent.

“We played hard (Sunday),” ’Canes coach Mark Stanley said. “We’re pleased with how we played in both games. Erie Strong Vincent is very tough and Pine-Richland is big and we got after them a little bit.”

Nick Klein was next with 19 points, Stephen Richardson tallied 12 markers and eight boards and Tonio Fulena chipped in with 10 points.

New Castle outscored the Rams 24-17 in the final frame to pull away.

Eric Holmes paced Pine-Richland (2-8) with 21 markers.

Erie Strong Vincent built the lead to 20 points in the fourth quarter Saturday and Stanley was on the verge of making a plethora of changes. However, Klein had other ideas as he scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth period to rally the ’Canes to within five with just two minutes to play.

The Colonels, though, hit their foul shots down the stretch to pull away for the victory.

Courtney Harden-Pullium led all scorers with 28 points for the Colonels.

Klein was named to the All-Tournament team as he scored 19 points in both games and also drained five 3-pointers in each contest.

“Klein shot the ball really well against Pine-Richland,” Stanley said. “He knocked down some big 3s against Erie Strong Vincent and all of a sudden we started to make a run in that game.”

Farrell claimed the championship game Sunday over Erie Strong Vincent (6-3), 66-63.
