Ellwood holds on to top Union

The Ellwood City Lincoln High girls basketball team proved it can hold a lead.
The Lady Wolverines held off a fourth-quarter run by Union to pull out a 58-53 WPIAL nonsection victory last night.
Ellwood City held a 47-37 buffer after three quarters and the Lady Scots (2-3) got no closer than five points in the final frame.
Beth Roitz registered 21 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (2-3). Alexandra Capalbo and Michelle Nocera contributed 11 markers each.
Capalbo pulled down 12 rebounds and Nocera was next with 10.
“This was a well played game between both teams,” Ellwood City coach Bill Gottuso said.
Savannah Partridge posted 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Scots, while Bridget Boyles followed with 18 markers.
Kaylin Clingensmith chipped in with seven assists and six steals for Union.
“The girls didn’t quit and I mentioned that to them after the game,” Lady Scots coach Damian Cassano said. “Ellwood City did the little things right to win the game.
“Things are starting to click and the girls are starting to see how close they are.”
