The Mohawk boys basketball team overcame free throw woes last night.

The Warriors converted just 19 of 37 from the line, but it was enough to hold off Neshannock in a nonsection game, 52-44.

“The foul shooting was a little bit of a disappointment; we have to get better,” Mohawk coach Kevin Wrona said. “Splitting foul shots won’t get it done.”

Matt Lorello, who tops the county in scoring after three games at 28.6, led Mohawk (3-0) with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

“That’s nothing unexpected from Matt,” Wrona said. “He’s our go-to guy and so far he’s delivering.”

Jake Grim chipped in with 18 points and five steals for the winners.

Neshannock’s Tony Kirkwood, who is right behind Lorello in the county scoring race at 25.6, netted 26 markers in the Lancers’ first loss.

Mohawk smothered Neshannock (2-1) in the first quarter, building an 8-2 lead and pushing it to 20-12.

“It was a tough game,” new Neshannock coach John Corey said. “Against Union (on Saturday) we shot the ball fairly well. Tonight, it was the complete opposite. We were ice cold in the first quarter.”
