Lady ’Canes win in overtime

The New Castle High girls basketball team passed its first big test — in overtime.
The Lady ’Canes pulled out a 64-60 win at North Catholic.
“For a young team, they kept their composure,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said. “They could have folded.”
The Lady ’Canes (3-0) led by seven with about three minutes left, but the Trojanettes rallied. North Catholic’s Ashley Bellovich scored at the buzzer to force overtime.
New Castle outscored the Trojanettes in the extra period, 10-6.
Shelby Rodgers scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She made six 3-pointers and converted 5 of 9 from the foul line. Kaylynn Waters followed with 12 points.
Jazelle Dennis led the team in assists with nine to go with five points.
New Castle made 19 of 42 from the field, while North Catholic was 22 of 42. The Trojanettes had 15 turnovers to New Castle’s 14.
North Catholic’s Lauren Savulchak led all scorers with 29 markers.
“The girls got a great win on the road,” Grybowski said. “They handled the pressure at the end and did a good job.”
