Lady Lancers claim share of section title
Neshannock (38) Vs. Shenango (31)
The Neshannock High girls basketball team is a section champion.

The only question remaining is whether the Lady Lancers will have to share the crown.

Neshannock slipped past Shenango 38-31 in a WPIAL Section 1-AA game on the road Monday night.

The win gives the Lady Lancers no less than a share of the league title. Neshannock is 9-2 in the section, 16-3 overall. If the Lady Lancers win at Laurel on Thursday night, they claim the title outright. If they were to lose, Mohawk and Riverside (both 8-3) could sneak in for a piece of the crown with victories. The Lady Warriors host Shenango on Friday night. Riverside meets section cellar-dweller New Brighton on Thursday.

Monday's Neshannock-Shenango game was hardly a work of art, according to Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski, but it got the job done.

"We didn't play particularly well and we didn't shoot the ball well, but we'll take it," Grybowski said.

Shenango led 21-18 at the half, and still maintained a one-point leading heading into the final frame when Bella Burrelli made a layup and Neshannock never relinquished the lead. The Lady Lancers were just 14 of 38 from the field, however, including 1 of 7 from 3-point land.

"We just weren't following the game plan," Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. "We allowed two kickouts to (Carolyn) Peterson go for 3s. We talked about that, but these kids are young and that will happen. We played better defensively in the second half. Our goal was under 10 points for all of Shenango's starters and we accomplished that, with the exception of Peterson.

"Offensively, we didn't get the ball inside until the last quarter, but when we did, Carmie (Matarazzo) had three nice drives."

Matarazzo led Neshannock with a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Hannah Haswell finished with nine rebounds and three blocks, including a big one on a shot by Seaburn late. Regan Moorhouse had three big free throws and Haswell added two down the stretch.

Peterson scored 10 points for playoff-bound Shenango (6-5, 11-9 overall).

Mohawk, meanwhile, kept its section title hopes alive with a 58-14 road win over New Brighton.

Mohawk is 16-3 overall.
