Giancola's career night paces Mohawk over Laurel
Mohawk (63) Vs. Laurel (45)
There was no stopping Erin Giancola Thursday night.
The Mohawk High girls basketball senior posted a career-high 24 points in a 63-45 victory over host Laurel in a WPIAL Section 1-AA matchup.
“She was unstoppable inside," Mohawk coach Mike O'Lare said. "They just didn’t have an answer for her."
Aliya Gage and Carlee Stelter followed Giancola's performance with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lady Warriors (5-2 section, 12-2 overall) jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first eight minutes, but Laurel put a dent in the lead despite a number of injuries to key players.
“We got off to a great start in the first quarter," O'Lare said. "But we haven’t been off to a start like that. In the second quarter, we had a huge letdown defensively off of that great start."
Laurel (1-6, 4-10) was without three starters at one point, making the comeback attempt increasingly difficult. Those opening spots in the rotation led to opportunities for younger players to take the spotlight.
"Injuries happen, it's just really hit us hard," Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. "It's rough, but you weather the storm. We may not come out with a win but the way they carry themselves, they'll find success down the road. I'm proud of the way they're carrying themselves."
Diana Pontius scored all of her team-high 12 points from beyond the arc, while Kristin Dicks and Caroline Gibson each added nine points.
