Neshannock turns up defense in rout of Mohawk
Neshannock (62) Vs. Mohawk (39)
The Neshannock High boys basketball team regrouped last night in a big way.

The Lancers used a strong defensive effort to claim a 62-39 WPIAL Section 1-AA road win over Mohawk.

The victory helps Neshannock (9-3 section, 14-5 overall) keep pace with Laurel (9-3, 14-6) for second place in the league. The Lancers were coming off a 66-60 overtime loss to visiting Riverside on Tuesday.

“I thought we played really well. We communicated well defensively and we were in the right position,” Lancers coach John Corey said. “The big thing for us I thought our starters played well.

“Our guys coming off the bench gave great contributions, too. That’s been the case all season. I thought everybody responded really well.”

The final week of section play is next week and Neshannock has two important games. The Lancers host section-leading Lincoln Park (12-0, 18-2) before closing out league play with a road matchup against the Spartans.

“This win gives us a lot of great momentum heading into what is the most important week of the season coming up,” Corey said.

Jake Rylott recorded 14 points to pace Neshannock and Ethan Moose was next with 13 markers, nine rebounds, six assists and five blocks.

Donald Colucci chipped in 10 points and six boards for the victors. Jimmy Medure snared eight rebounds to go with his eight points.

Ricky Malutic paced the Warriors with 16 points and Zach Shasteen added 10.

Mohawk (0-12, 1-19) has lost 12 straight games.

The Lancers were 25 of 50 from the field, compared to 16 of 43 for the Warriors. Neshannock won the battle of the boards as well, 34-20.

An attempt to reach Warriors coach Rob Fadden for comment and additional information was unsuccessful.
