Union boys defeat Wilmington
Union (64) Vs. Wilmington (48)
The Union High boys basketball team continues to find different players to stuff the stat sheet.
Cornell Charles netted a game-high 21 points in the Scotties’ 64-48 nonsection victory over Wilmington on Saturday.
Charles’ performance comes on the heels of Garrison Bell’s 25-point showing in Union’s 82-54 victory over Friday’s opponent, Quigley Catholic.
“We figured we’d be pretty balanced this year,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “Cornell had a good game (Saturday) and Garrison the night before. They’ve been very unselfish.”
Charles added five steals to his total, while Bell tallied 11 points in Saturday’s victory.
Wilmington (1-4) had two players hit the double-digit mark, as Reese Bender and Marc Peoples scored 10 points each.
Union (3-4) set the tone early on with a 17-8 first quarter and came out on top in each quarter the rest of the way to provide a sufficient cushion heading toward the final buzzer.
Both Union and Wilmington played two games in as many days, with the Scotties taking two victories and the Greyhounds falling twice, the first time to Lakeview on Friday.
“Wilmington was in the same thing, but it’s not easy,” Stanley said. “We’re both in the same boat but it was nice to get that win heading into Tuesday against Eden Christian Academy for a big section game.”
