Defense carries Lady Lancers past Mohawk
Neshannock (37) Vs. Mohawk (33)
Defense reigned supreme at Neshannock High last night.
The Lady Lancers girls basketball team triumphed over Mohawk in a 37-33 Section 1-AA meeting.
“It’s all about the defensive end,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “There will be nights where you’re hot and nights where you’re not, but the defensive end should never waver. Every one of my kids played hard and played well defensively, that was the key.”
Madison McHale paced the Lady Lancers (2-0 section, 4-1 overall) with 11 points and four steals, while Erin Warvell totaled 10 points, six boards and four assists.
Erin Giancola was the top scorer for Mohawk (2-1, 4-2) with 10 points. Samantha Carr added nine and Melissa Verlotte had eight.
The Lady Warriors had a six-point advantage going into the break following an Erin Warvell 3-pointer. The third period saw neither team convert offensively, with Neshannock taking the 4-0 advantage.
Both sides shot 12 free throws each in the final eight minutes. Mohawk connected on eight of its attempts, while Neshannock converted on seven of its trips to the charity stripe.
“It was sad that somebody had to lose,” Grybowski. “I thought it was a well played high school game, both teams played really hard.
