Balanced Laurel tops Riverside
Laurel (65) Vs. Riverside (58)
The Laurel High boys basketball team got help from a handful of players in its win over Riverside.

The Spartans used a balanced attack to upend the host Panthers 65-58 in their Section 1-AA meeting.

Laurel had four players score double-digit points, as Mason Mraz led the way with a 17-point, eight-rebound performance. Jacob Wilson followed with 12 points, Noah Wertz tallied 11 points and Scott Siddall totaled 10.

“The balance is one thing we like to think that makes us difficult to play against,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “I think it was 14-3 (Riverside) and we hung in there. Tucker Skerbetz made three threes, two in the first and those were huge. We have multiple guys stepping up and he stepped up for us tonight.”

Skerbetz added nine points, all from beyond the arc. The Spartans (2-0 section, 3-2 overall) connected on nine 3-pointers with Skerbetz, Wertz and Mraz each contributing three.

Riverside (1-1, 2-2) countered with three double-digit scorers with Zach Gould’s game-high 20 points, with Dylan Speicher (17) and Logan Sheridan (14) following.

“To their credit, it was a great basketball game and it’s a shame someone had to lose,” Locke said. “They played well and made big shot after big shot to match us.

“Obviously now that this one is over, we’ll look forward to (Shenango) on Friday night. We’ll take any road win in the section.”
