Lady Warriors’ win a team effort
Mohawk (59) Vs. Laurel (48)
Mohawk High girls basketball coach Mike O’Lare used 10 players against Laurel last night.
He needed all of them in a 59-48 WPIAL Section 1-AA victory over the host Lady Spartans.
“Tonight, where we are with our team, we played 10 kids and we needed 10 kids,” O’Lare said. “Points aside, we’re still growing as a team. We’re having kids step up each night and finding wins.
“We’re playing a lot of kids and we need to play them. It’s a lot easier to learn once you win, but there’s a lot of learning to do and a lot of things to clean up.”
Senior Samantha Carr stepped up for the Lady Warriors (3-1 overall) with 21 points, including eight from the free throw line. Erin Giancola added 14 in the victory.
Laurel (2-2) had three players score double-digit points in Diana Pontius (12), Kristin Dicks (11) and Ellen Shaffer (10).
The Lady Spartans trailed by three points heading into the final quarter, but Mohawk was able to separate itself. Laurel started to foul the Lady Warriors and had four players foul out. Mohawk converted 20 of its 32 attempts from the free throw line while outscoring Laurel 26-18 in the final eight minutes.
