Coach’s concern leads to Lady Lancers romp
Neshannock (73) Vs. Union (29)
Luann Grybowski was less than happy with her Neshannock High girls basketball team and let the Lady Lancers know it.

The coach was displeased with her playoff-bound club’s defensive efforts through the first two quarters against Union last night and voiced her displeasure at the break.

The visiting Lady Lancers responded to the tirade by limiting the Lady Scots to 18 points over the final two quarters of the 73-29 nonsection win.

Neshannock (18-1 overall) doubled up Union 22-11 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 40-19 at the half before cruising after intermission.

“I got on them early, because we gave up 19 points in the first half,” Grybowski said. “Kids come go into games with certain preconceived notions of how the game’s going to go.

“I’m looking for certain things to happen. Scoring 73 points is fine and dandy, but we needed to be better defensively. I got on them at halftime about defenses winning championships. I think they got the message. I think I’m going to start rewarding kids that work their butts off on defense and are getting tips and deflections.”

Grybowski credited Erin Warvell, who had 10 assists and four steals, for her efforts.

“They were in a zone and Erin found the open man,” Grybowski said. “That’s not an easy thing to do. She made some really nice passes. She’s an unselfish player. It’s not like she didn’t have opportunities, but she’s a true team player. She’s willing to give up the ball and a lot of times, that doesn’t get mentioned. A lot of people scored, because she found them open.”

Madison McHale led the Lady Lancers with 25 points and five rebounds, while Tayler Grybowski collected an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. She added seven steals and four assists.

Regan Moorhouse was next with 13 tallies and sevens steals and Cassidy Burrelli tacked on 12 points and five boards.

Skylar Thompson paced Union (3-14) with a season-high 16 points.
