Slipping away
Laurel (54) Vs. Aliquippa (69)
The Laurel High boys basketball team made too many mistakes last night.

The errors, coupled with an athletic Aliquippa squad, added up to a 69-54 WPIAL Section 2-AA home loss for the host Spartans.

“We had a few breakdowns and let it get away from us,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “There’s no excuses. We had a few bad possessions and we gave them second and third opportunities. A team of that caliber will make you pay for those kind of mistakes.”

The Quips (7-1 section, 11-3 overall) jumped out to a eight-point lead in the first quarter, but Laurel (3-5, 7-7) used a 13-5 run in the second quarter to knot the score at 22.

Aliquippa closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 30-22 lead into intermission.

“We turned the ball over,” Locke said. “That’s it in a nutshell. We were able to tie it up, but they went on a run going into halftime.”

The Spartans kept it close in the third quarter, but a 21-14 Aliquippa cushion in the fourth quarter provided the final 15-point margin.

“We battled and our kids played hard,” Locke said. “They just were the better team tonight.”

Laurel made just 17-of-47 attempts from the field, including 8 of 26 from inside the 3-point line.

“They were up in our face,” Locke said. “Their size caused us problems. They affect the types of shots we were able to get.”

Josh Dando posted 13 points, while adding five steals, three rebounds and three assists. Scott Siddall also scored 13 markers and Mason Mraz tallied 10.
