Union boys edge Sewickley Academy
Union (49) Vs. Sewickley (47)
The Union High boys basketball team made the plays down the stretch to earn a win Saturday.

The Scotties deflected the ball away on an inbounds pass and time expired in a 49-47 nonsection home win over Sewickley Academy.

Union (4-8) led 49-47 with 3.1 seconds to play. The Panthers (5-3) were inbounding the ball under their own basket. They threw the ball in and the Scotties were able to get a piece of it. By the time the ball landed out of bounds the clock expired.

Union was coming off a 69-46 WPIAL Section 1-A home loss to Western Beaver the night before. It was the section opener for both schools.

“The kids came to play,” Scotties coach Dave Smialowski said. “Our intenesity wasn’t there on Friday.

“That’s somethng we talked about. They came out and competed (on Saturday). That’s a solid Sewickley Academy team. We’ll take a win and hopefully we can build from it.”

Anthony Rush and Benjamin Young both scored 14 points to lead Union. Young added seven assists and five rebounds, while Rush was 5 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 5 from behind the arc.

The Scotties were 11 of 20 from three-point range.

“They were double-teaming Ben and he was finding the open man,” Smialowski said. “To their credit, they knocked them down. We need them to step up and hit them.

“If the other guys can step up and hit the shots, it will open things up more for Young.”

Jamie Hooks pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for Union.

Drew Johnson paced the Panthers with 14 points.
