Riverside edges Ellwood boys
Riverside (61) Vs. Ellwood City (60)
The Ellwood City Lincoln High boys basketball team got a buzzer-beater last night.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough as the visiting Wolverines fell to rival Riverside 61-60 in a nonsection battle.

Trailing 61-58, Wolverines reserve Brady Kosior tipped in Frederick Roth’s missed 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“We wanted a good look at the end and we got one,” Ellwood City coach Anthony Ovial said. “We tipped it back in, but there wasn’t enough time for them to inbound the ball. Some times, they fall and some times, they don’t.

“Ellwood-Riverside is a rivalry and it’s a big game. I thought our kids were fired up to play in this game.”

Ellwood City (1-6) needed a 38-point second half effort to claw back from a 17-5 first quarter deficit.

“Our guys played hard and we got down early,” Ovial said. “We had some good looks all game long. In the first quarter, they just didn’t fall. Riverside got buckets to put themselves up. That put us in a hole that we had to fight back.

“We played tremendous defense after the first quarter and got some easy buckets to fight our way back into the game.”

Roth posted a game-high 22 points, while Tanner Walsh was credited by his coach for helping get the Wolverines back into the game.

“Roth had the hot hand for us,” Ovial said. “He stepped into the moment and didn’t step away. He played confidently. He some big minutes for us and there were times we couldn’t take him out.

“But it was Tanner Walsh that made us go tonight. He made some great reads. He found the open guys and was a playmaker. As the shots started falling, he was the engine that got us going.”
