Lady Wildcats win second straight
Shenango (57) Vs. Riverside (49)
The Lady Wildcats didn’t wait nearly as long to pick up another Section 2-AA victory.

After waiting nearly four years between its previous two section victories, Shenango (2-0, 4-1) invaded Riverside’s home gym and posted its second straight league win in as many tries this year.

“Two in a row sure is sweet,” said Shenango coach Brian Turk, who missed his team’s previous win because of a work commitment. “It was pretty exciting to witness and enjoy this with the girls. This is big for the school, because we haven’t had a lot of success. It’s early in the season, but we’ll take two wins heading into Christmas that’s for sure.”

The Lady Wildcats overcame a 9-6 first-quarter deficit to take a 27-15 lead over the Lady Panthers (0-1, 1-4) into the second half.

“We came out a little shell-shocked,” Turk said. “Riverside isn’t an easy place to play and we got off to a slow start. We made a couple adjustments between quarters and picked up the tempo. It paid off and we stepped on the gas. We took over in the second. It was nice to have that cushion going into the half, because the second half was a shootout — it was a track meet.”

Carolyn Peterson led a balanced Shenango attack with 17 points and four rebounds, while Angelina Sibeto contributed 14 points, eight assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Ashleigh Presnar and Samantha Seaburn each recorded 10 markers. Emma Rich had six points and three assists, while Presnar tacked on five rebounds and three steals.

“We have to make sure we’re balanced,” Turk said. “I told the girls anyone can step up and reach double figures. Tonight, we had four kids do it.

“Every little thing adds up. As a team, we played well. Everyone contributed. It’s not always about scoring. It was nice to have those four in double figures, but the other stuff really helps.”

Jaqui Baker pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Wildcats.

“Jaqui didn’t score, but she had some big rebounds,” Turk said. “She had eight defensive rebounds and three offensive rebounds. It was nice to see her contribute on the boards and get the ball to the guards. We didn’t have Sarah Herb tonight and Samantha Seaburn was in foul trouble, so Jaqui filled a void. That was huge.”
