‘Sloppy’ Mohawk outlasts Ellwood
Mohawk (56) Vs. Ellwood City (49)
The Mohawk High boys basketball team had luck on its side last night.

The Warriors overcame 16 missed free throws in a 56-49 nonsection home win over Ellwood City Lincoln. On the night, Mohawk made 19-of-35 attempts from the charity stripe.

“Oddly enough, we talked to the guys at practice this week about our free-throw shooting,” Mohawk coach Rob Fadden said. “Luckily, it didn’t come back to bite us. We’re happy that we’re getting to the line 35 times. We just need to make more. That could cost us in the long run.”

The Warriors (2-1) trailed 10-7 after the first quarter and took a 25-23 lead into the second half before securing the win with a 21-point fourth quarter.

“We were pretty sloppy in the first quarter,” Fadden said. “Ellwood was applying pressure. We just didn’t handle it well, but the kids adjusted pretty well to it. We battled back and got some turnovers. We got some stops and converted at the other end.”

Spencer McConahy posted a team-high 15 points, while Zach Shasteen also reached double figures with 10.

“Both played very nice games on both ends of the floor,” Fadden said. “Spencer was playing under control and he was one of our bright spots at the line. Zach did a nice job of controlling things for us.”

Tanner Walsh led the Wolverines (0-3) with 19 points and Frederick Roth tacked on 16.

“We’ll take any win we can get,” Fadden said. “There’s definitely room for improvement and the guys know it. We have a lot of work before the games count for real (when section play begins) Friday.”
