Red-hot Richards helps ’Canes roll
New Castle (88) Vs. Perry Traditional (34)
Saturday was an historic night at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.

On a night when the Red Hurricane honored its 1993 WPIAL Class AAAA championship team, two current New Castle players put their names in the record books as well.

Anthony Richards tallied a game-high 27 points to lead the ’Canes past Perry Traditional Academy, 88-34, in the championship game of the New Castle Tipoff Tournament. Richards swished nine 3-pointers to establish a program record. He eclipsed Eddie Pagley, who had eight treys in a game. In addition, Richards passed Brandon Domenick for the career 3-point mark. Richards now has 212 for his career, which topped Domenick’s 207.

Teammate Malik Hooker added to the night as he went over the 1,000-point mark. He has 1,001 career points. He is the third ’Canes player to surpass that mark in the last three seasons, joining Corey Eggleston and Shawn Anderson.

“It was a great night from the beginning. It was a byproduct of a lot of hard work coming to fruition in a lot of ways,” New Castle coach Ralph Blundo said. “I thought, for the most part, this weekend we played well. For the most part, I thought our guys were doing things the right way. I think we got better this weekend and I think that is most important.”

New Castle (2-0) bolted to a 26-9 lead after the first and held a 48-19 halftime advantage.

Hooker, who was named the tournament’s MVP, added 17 points to go with his 36 points from Friday. Jake McPhatter had 13 points and Drew Allen added nine. Stew Allen had five points and joined McPhatter, Richards and Hooker on the all-tournament team.
