Lady Lancers lock down Laurel
Neshannock (62) Vs. Laurel (41)
Defense delivered last night for the Neshannock High girls basketball team.

The Lady Lancers forced 25 turnovers in a 62-41 WPIAL Section 2-AA road win over Laurel.

“It was our defensive effort again,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “We always talk about keeping teams to 40 points or less. We didn’t quite do that, but I’ll take it.”

Eighteen of the Lady Spartans’ turnovers came on passes in their season finale.

“Neshannock played really good defense against us,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said.

The Lady Lancers (6-6 section, 11-10 overall) were up 41-34 after the third period and outscored Laurel 21-7 in the final frame. The Lady Spartans (3-9, 6-14) made just one field goal in the fourth quarter.

“It just slipped away really fast in the fourth quarter,” Shevitz said. “I thought we came out hard and with intensity for three quarters. The girls never quit.”

Said Grybowski of the fourth-quarter defense, “We just picked it up full court, man-to-man. I think that wore them down. They were down and then started fouling.”

Neshannock was 22 of 28 from the foul line, including 12 of 16 in the fourth period.

Madison McHale led all scorers with a game-high 21 points for the Lady Lancers. She added eight rebounds and six steals, while going 6 of 8 at the foul line in the final frame.

“Madison is our steady scorer,” Grybowski said. “She’s been playing better defensively, too.”

Alexandra Fischer was next for the winners with 12 points and five rebounds, while Tayler Grybowski chipped in with 11 markers, 10 boards and five steals. Erin Warvell tallied nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

Ellen Shaffer netted a game-high nine points for Laurel. Jessica Conrad and Maddison Deinert followed with eight markers apiece. Conrad blocked six shots.

The Lady Spartans will return the entire roster, which has Shevitz excited for the future.

“I think the outlook is positive for next year with everyone back,” she said. “We’ll see what happens.”
