Lady Lancers roll past Clairton
Neshannock (74) Vs. Clairton (40)
Strength in numbers powered the Neshannock High girls basketball team last night.
Nine different Lady Lancers found their way on the scoresheet as Neshannock rolled visiting Clairton in nonsection action, 74-40.
“My goal for this season was to try to get eight girls in a rotation,” Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. “At the moment we have seven. They’re playing a substantial amount of minutes and doing a nice job. We still make mistakes, yes. But they’re still young, and they’re young mistakes. They play hard all the time and never quit. They give me effort and that’s all I can really ask for.”
For Neshannock (10-10), Madison McHale scored a season-high 28 points. Tayler Grybowski followed with 13 points. Cassidy Burrelli finished with nine and her sister, Katie Burrelli, the only senior on the squad, finished with seven.
Of the 27 field goals from the Lady Lancers, the team registered assists on 21 of them. Grybowski had the top mark of eight. Erin Warvell was next with five and McHale had four.
“We passed the ball exceptionally well,” Luann Grybowski said. “Overall, the kids played really well. It was nice to see.”
The Lady Lancers employed a different strategy than usual by going to a zone defense. For the most part, it paid off, as Neshannock limited the Lady Bears (7-12) to 20 points per half. However, they also surrendered eight 3-pointers.
“They had some pretty athletic kids and played a zone,” Grybowski said. “We played zone because I wanted to save our legs for our game (today) against Laurel. We extended it a little bit. Every three Clairton hit was from at least three feet behind the line. So, I’m not too concerned about that.”
On the flip side, Neshannock continued to pick up buckets from behind the arc, notching nine 3-pointers. McHale had a career-high five and is one of four Lady Lancers with at least 10 on the season.
“We have seven different kids who have the green light to shoot them (3-pointers),” Grybowski said. “If we’re open, we shoot it. It’s definitely a plus.”
Justice Hall recorded 13 points to lead the Lady Bears.
