The Mohawk High girls basketball team is perfect no more in section play.

Poor free-throw shooting doomed the Lady Warriors to their first WPIAL Section 2-AA loss of the season at Riverside last night, 51-49.

Mohawk (10-1 section, 14-6 overall) connected on just 4 of 12 free-throw attempts while the Lady Panthers finished 18 of 26.

The Lady Warriors jumped to a 20-18 halftime lead, but 14 third-quarter points by Riverside (8-3, 12-8) proved to be the difference.

Shelby Brown notched 14 points to pace Mohawk. Paige Ruby followed with 13. Samantha Carr scored a career-high 11 points, including three 3-pointers, also a career-high.

Mohawk clinched a share of the section championship with Beaver Falls by virtue of a 54-33 win over New Brighton last week. With a victory over visiting Shenango (0-11, 7-13) on Friday, the Lady Warriors would win the title outright.

Alexis Deep, Nicole Mansfield and Ariana Kelly netted 13 points apiece for the Lady Panthers. Katie Stang had a team-high three 3-pointers and finished with nine points.

Attempts to reach Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare for comments were unsuccessful.
