Neshannock rolls in Coaches vs. Cancer game
Neshannock (72) Vs. Shenango (45)
Familiar foes faced off for the third time this season in WPIAL Section 2-AA action — with similar results.

The Neshannock High boys basketball team defeated Shenango for the third time this season with a 72-45 decision in the fifth annual Coaches vs. Cancer game.

“It’s always tough to beat a team three times. I was a bit concerned with that and nervous we weren’t going to be in the right mindset,” Neshannock coach John Corey said. “I was extremely pleased we brought the right mindset.”

Neshannock (6-3 section, 12-3 overall) scored 26 points in the second quarter to take a 40-17 lead into halftime. The Lancers outrebounded the Wildcats, 43-19, in limiting second-chance opportunities. Out of 71 total possessions for Shenango (2-7, 5-10), the Wildcats managed to get a second-chance opportunity on offensive rebounds just eight times.

“Obviously, it’s everyone’s defensive goal to have it one shot and done,” Corey said. “Shenango didn’t shoot the ball very well. I like to think a little bit of that was on our defensive pressure. We did a good job defensively.”

Ernie Burkes had a game-high 25 points and was named the Coaches vs. Cancer player of the game for the Lancers. Matt McKinney had 12 points and six rebounds. Tyler Haswell led on the glass for the Lancers with nine boards to go with 10 points.

Shenango couldn’t adjust to Neshannock’s offense after the first quarter.

“I thought they did a good job of pushing the ball up the floor in the second quarter,” Wildcats coach Bob McQuiston said. “It kind of snowballed against us. It seemed like there was a lid on the basket in the first half for us. There were times we would get in their face, and they’d still make it.”

Greg DePorzio registered 13 points to earn the Coaches vs. Cancer player of the game for Shenango. Brenton Booher was next with 11.

This was the fifth year Neshannock has hosted the event in affiliation with the American Cancer Society.

“Everybody affiliated was appreciative of the individual donors,” Corey said. “In excess, over $25,000 was raised. Shenango and Neshannock businesses and also citizens that live in the two townships do fundraising. A lot of the students and teachers are involved in all of the community schools.”
