Union boys whip West Shamokin
Union (76) Vs. West Shamokin (50)
The Union High boys basketball team put it together in the second half Saturday.

The Scotties outscored West Shamokin by 25 points in the final half en route to a 76-50 nonsection home win.

Union (13-2) took charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Class AA Wolves (8-7) 21-5 in the third quarter after holding a 34-33 halftime advantage.

“We got the press working a little bit and made some adjustments,” Scotties coach Dave Smialowski said of the second half. “We were able to keep it going, too.

“It was a physical game and our kids had to adjust to that. We had trouble with our press early in the game. But we dug in more in the half court in the second half and that gave them some problems.”

Tre Major led the Scotties with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Benjamin Young was next for the winners with 17 markers, while John Hilke tossed in 12.

Markel Peace and Joe Salmen supplied nine points each for Union. Peace handed out five assists. Salmen and Drew Robinson posted four each.

Anthony Rocco registered 21 points to lead West Shamokin, 15 coming in the first half.

“We concentrated on Rocco a lot more in the second half,” Smialowski said.

Union, which is ranked No. 3 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, won its second straight game after a 72-57 loss to Lincoln Park on Tuesday. The Leopards are the top-ranked team in Class A by the Post-Gazette.

“They’re fine. This group is a hard-working group,” Smialowski said of the team regrouping from that loss. “When adversity hits, they handle it well.

“The second half of section play will be important.”

The Scotties will have to wait until Friday to open the second half of Section 1-A action. Union (4-1 section) will host Western Beaver (2-3, 4-10) at 7:30 p.m. that night.

“It’s a good break for us,” Smialowski said. “It’s going to be a few days for us to start the second half and that will give us time to rest the bodies. We play at a pretty high pace so the rest will be good.”
