Hot-shooting ’Cats defeat Mercer
Shenango (66) Vs. Mercer (55)
Four 3-pointers during a third-quarter comeback led to a victory for the Shenango High boys basketball team last night.

The Wildcats scored 20 points in the frame en route to a 66-55 nonsection decision over visiting Greenville.

“They did a great job in the second half finding the open guy,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “We did a better job pushing the play up the floor and rotating the ball.”

The Wildcats (5-8) failed to find a groove by the end of the first half, trailing 28-27. McQuiston contributes the slow start to Shenango’s attitude after Tuesday’s loss at fellow WPIAL Section 2-AA opponent Mohawk.

“The Mohawk loss was a tough one. The team seemed like they were emotionally let down,” he said. “I thought they did a much better job all around in the second half. They wanted to come back and get a win.”

Greg DePorzio was on top of the scoresheet for the Wildcats for the second straight night, finishing with 20 points with 9 of 9 shooting from the free-throw line. With 4 of 4 makes in his 14-point effort against Mohawk on Tuesday, DePorzio now is 13 of 13 from the line in his last two games.

“He refuses to lose. He’s a defender who shoots the ball well,” McQuiston said. “He’s our emotional leader. We can’t ask anymore out of him. He’s the kind of player you want on your team with the work he puts in every day.”

Josh McCormick had 14 points, including a team-high four 3-pointers off the bench. Shenango’s sixth man has scored 21 points in his past two games, dwarfing the 18 total points he scored in seven previous games this season.

“He shot the ball well. He was just feeling it,” McQuiston said. “The guys were finding him and he was knocking it down. It was big for him to come off the bench and get four 3-pointers.”

Shenango’s Brenton Booher also scored in double digits with 10 points while providing help on the offensive glass.

“Brian Tanner, Brenton Booher and James Micco did a good job on the boards tonight,” McQuiston said. “We’ve really put an emphasis on getting more offensive rebounds. The team rebounded the ball very well.”
