Both teams had plenty to play for in a District 10, Region 2-AA girls basketball showdown between Wilmington and Greenville.
Wilmington’s Senior Night clashed with the Lady Trojans’ quest for a region title, and a third-quarter push by Greenville helped it secure a 42-32 victory, giving it an outright Region 2-AA championship.
The Lady Greyhounds (6-6, 12-10), who lost by 25 to Greenville in their first meeting, led 10-7 after one quarter. Greenville took the lead in the second quarter and took a 22-17 lead into halftime. The Lady Trojans (11-1, 19-4) extended their advantage to 38-25 by the start of the fourth quarter.
“We were pumped and excited for the game, and we came out strong,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “We played great defense. It was a great game both ways. They got on a bit of a run in the third quarter, with seven or eight points in a row, and we couldn’t recover from that.”
Alanna Elliott paced the Lady Greyhounds with 13 points. Greenville’s Brooklyn Taylor led all scorers with 14.
Wilmington held Greenville to four points in the fourth.
“In spite of losing, I still feel like it’s one of those games that we were so close, but we just didn’t hit a few shots that we needed,” Sanford said. “It was a great defensive game, and in spite of the loss, I thought the girls played great.”
