Union girls win, but just miss out on playoffs

A resurgent season ended in disappointment for the Union High girls basketball team.

The Lady Scots came up just short in their bid to reach the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Union did its part, beating Section 1-A foe Western Beaver, 47-16, on the road last night, but it didn’t get the help it needed. Cornell defeated Rochester, giving the final playoff spot to Aliquippa, which finished with the season with an identical 6-6 conference record but got the nod because it defeated Union in both head-to-head matches this season.

It was still quite an impressive run by the Lady Scots (13-9 overall), who finished last season 4-17 and were 1-17 the year prior. They defeated Western Beaver despite not having leading-scorer Savannah Partridge, who tore her anterior cruciate ligament Monday in a loss to Quigley Catholic.

“She seems to be in pretty good spirits,” Union coach Brian Fadden said of Partridge. “She’s disappointed she doesn’t get to finish the season, but she had a great year. It’s just a shame it had to end this way.”

Five players scored at least six points for the Lady Scots against Western Beaver (0-12, 0-16), led by senior Katelyn Kosciuszko, who scored 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double in her final game.

“I’m very pleased with how Katelyn Kosciuszko played,” Fadden said. “She ended her career on a good note.”

Miranda Heaney added 11 points for Union, including three 3-pointers. The Lady Scots jumped out to a 26-6 first half lead, holding Western Beaver to three points in each of the first two quarters.

Starting out strong has been a big part of Union’s resurgence this year, Fadden said.

“The biggest difference is that we played with more confidence and went into games expecting to win,” he said. “We built some confidence early in the season, and we kept it throughout the year.”
