Mohawk High coach Rob Fadden would have rather had his team start playing sound basketball much earlier.

For the second straight night, the Warriors struggled for long stretches. But this time, they pulled it together at just the right time.

Jimmy Gerazounis hit a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, and Mohawk hit key free throws in the extra frame to secure a 50-46 nonsection home win over Central Valley. The Warriors are a Class AAA team that competes with New Castle in Section 2.

“I made the comment yesterday to the paper that we’re struggling to put four quarters together,” Fadden said. “It happened again tonight. We turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter. Then we settled down from there and actually started running some offense and getting some good looks.”

Mohawk’s Tim Glass scored a game-high 20 points and went an astounding 16 of 20 from the foul line. The Warriors (7-7) made six of eight free throws in overtime. That consisted of all their points as they outscored Central Valley, 6-2.

“Vince Menichino did a heck of a job of taking their leading scorer, Daniel Steffine, out the offense that they were running in overtime,” Fadden said.

Gerazounis scored 11 of his 13 and Glass 16 of his 20 in the second half, when Mohawk rallied from nine points down to rally past the Warriors (8-6). They trailed, 31-26, entering the fourth quarter and were down by three with 10 seconds left when Gerazounis, who scored eight points in the fourth, came off a double screen to nail the 3 from the right wing.

Jonathan Grim added 10 points for Mohawk.
