Wallas sets school record in Laurel win
Laurel (57) Vs. New Brighton (49)
Laurel High girls basketball standout Marisa Wallas made the most of her opportunities last night.

Wallas sank a school-record 14 free throws to lead the Lady Spartans to a 57-49 WPIAL Section 2-AA home victory over New Brighton.

A 5-foot-2 senior guard, Wallas was 14 of 23 from the line, including 8 of 14 in the fourth quarter to help Laurel seal the win.

“They were in a position where they had to foul,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said of the Lady Lions. “She’s our best foul shooter.

“Marisa played a phenomenal game.”

Wallas came in averaging 53 percent from the line (35 of 66). Last year, she joined Nikki Downing, Becca Kerr, Marilyn Brown and Kim Bair by making 13 free throws in a game.

“Marisa was determined to break it,” Shevitz said of the old record. “She wanted the record, and she does a great job of getting to the foul line.”

Wallas led all scorers with 22 points for the Lady Spartans (2-3 section, 6-6 overall). She added six rebounds, five assists and five steals as well.

Aislinn Deinert was next for the winners with 17 markers.

Dalainey Meals contributed nine markers for Laurel, and Ellen Shaffer pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds to go with her seven markers.

The Lady Spartans were 23 of 37 from the foul line, compared to 8 of 19 for the Lady Lions.

The win vaults Laurel into sole possession of fourth place in the section standings. New Brighton is a half-game behind in the chase for the fourth and final WPIAL playoff berth in the section.

“Both Aislinn and Marisa had phenomenal games,” Shevitz said. “That was big for us; we needed this victory.”

Kaitlyn Hopkins tossed in 19 points for the Lady Lions (2-4, 6-5).

“Hopkins is tough to defend,” Shevitz said. “She’s a big girl, and she creates matchup problems.”

Laurel led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and 22-15 at the break. The Lady Spartans held a 37-26 advantage after three periods.

The victory marks the third straight year Laurel defeated New Brigton at home. It’s the Lady Spartans’ fourth win against the Lady Lions in the last five meetings as well.
