Madison McHale came through in the clutch for the Neshannock High girls basketball team last night.

McHale drained a three-pointer with just under 20 seconds left to lift the Lady Lancers to a 39-36 win over Rochester at the Penn State-Beaver Christmas Tournament.

The victory propelled Neshannock (3-6) to fifth place in the tournament.
“It’s nice to get a win,” Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. “It was close the entire way and we looked sluggish the whole way.

“It’s tough to play over the holiday break. But it’s good for the young kids to get a win in a close game. I commend my girls for that.”

McHale’s trifecta put the Lady Lancers up 37-36. The Lady Rams missed a shot on the other end and Neshannock secured possession. McHale sealed the win by draining a pair of free throws with eight seconds to play.

McHale netted a game-high 20 points, to go along with six rebounds. She was 4 of 9 from behind the arc, en route to an all-tournament selection.

“Madison had a nice game,” Grybowski said. “She hit some big 3s for us. To be down two points and for her to knock down a shot like that, it’s a great thing.”

Marissa DeMatteo was next with 10 points for the Lady Lancers. She added four assists and four rebounds as well. Tayler Grybowski, the coach’s daughter, pulled down four rebounds and handed out three assists to go along with her three markers.

Jamie Simon and Kayla Besong tossed in 11 points apiece for the Lady Rams (3-6).

Rochester won the first meeting against Neshannock on its home floor, 71-58.

The Lady Lancers were 13 of 38 from the floor, compared to 12 of 50 for Rochester. The Lady Rams won the battle of the boards, 35-22, including pulling down 18 on the offensive end.

Neshannock also committed 21 turnovers to just 15 for Rochester.

“The turnovers are still too many,” Grybowski said. “Hopefully we build off of this win. It’s not going to be easy, but we’ll keep plugging away.”
